Special Needs Mom seeking Personal Care Assistant

It's been a very, very long time since I've written on this thing. I have been so busy with life for the past month and a half!

I started school, and I love it. I am having fun in my classes! They are interesting to me, and even though they are challenging it feels good to give my brain a workout. My schedule includes a bit more "me" time now. It's only 6 hours a week that I have to go to school, but it's 6 hours that I didn't make for myself before! I am trying to adjust my work as well but that's still a project in progress.

Penelope has gone back to school. She has visitors at the house every day except Friday, and we go to school on Wednesday. She got fitted for new orthopedic braces because she grew out of her old ones! Her new "Dino Boots" should be ready to pick up on Tuesday! We see the Geneticist and the Eye Doc at the end of the month, and I am squeezing in a class for a free car seat next week. We are always doing something!

We recently wrote a new Individual Education Plan for PP's new school year, and it includes her being considered disabled across all boards so she can finally access different services that she needs. This means Hennepin County will no longer take away PP's health insurance for their random reviews of her case, she will never be denied health care coverage! This "review" problem with HC has been ongoing for the past year. Whenever PP gets sick and goes to the hospital, or needs to go to an appointment, Hennepin County suddenly has to review her case and consequently her health insurance becomes invalid until everything gets straightened out. Then, I get a crapload of medical bills that I have to waste my time screwing with because I have to deal with the insurance company. It's frustrating. I just got the paper work this week to declare her disabled, but it's about a two-inch thick stack of papers that I have to supply double the amount of "proofs" for. It will probably cost $30 to mail all these damn papers. I know this isn't the only time I will have to fill out insane amounts of paper work, but it WILL be the last time PP gets denied health insurance!

Another benefit of this change in coverage is the ability to receive PCA services! A Personal Care Assistant is someone who would come to our house and take care of PP for X amount of hours each week. This person could be a friend our family, a family member, or someone hired by the agency that I choose to get this service through. This person is like a baby sitter who is employed by an agency... yeah they do get paid! I would prefer to have a friend or family member be the person taking care of PP while I go do things like attend school, work or run errands. For anyone interested I will need to do sort of an interview and application process, but that shouldn't be too hard or time consuming, right?! This person doesn't necessarily have to be trained in being a PCA, because the agency provides short training classes for people providing the service. If you, or anyone you know who is trustworthy and caring are interested in this opportunity to help us out and make some money let me know! There is a giant sea of agencies that hire hundreds of PCA's all the time, and trying to find a place that can provide a consistent aide for a long period of time is nearly impossible. Also, if you have information on a good agency to go through or know a PCA that you would refer to a friend, send their info my way!

Well it's about that time to get back to making phone calls and a dinner roast!
